This remarkable building is none other than the Balassa House, a place that transports us back to the 19th century. In 1852, János Balassa, the renowned European surgeon professor, purchased the two original structures, which ten years later were rebuilt and merged into a romantic-style corner rental house based on the plans of Miklós Ybl.
According to the original architectural concept, the building was designed as a three-storey residence featuring a grand inner courtyard that met the expectations of the era. The gateway still preserves the wheel guards, and the vast interior space was once accessible even by horse-drawn carriages. Today, this courtyard has been transformed into a beautifully maintained garden filled with evergreens, which won the Most Beautiful Courtyard of Terézváros award in 2009.
Formerly located along the old Váci Road—now Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road—the Balassa House is one of the oldest buildings in the area. Thanks to continuous exterior and interior renovations and careful maintenance, it remains one of the most impressive and distinguished buildings in the neighborhood.
